Britta Marakatt-Labba designs this year's pink ribbon

Sami textile artist Britta Marakatt-Labba designs this year's pink ribbon for the Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon campaign 2024. The campaign runs throughout October and raises money for Swedish cancer research, with a particular focus on breast cancer. Britta Marakatt-Labba, who for over 40 years has created art with embroidery inspired by Sami history, contemporary times and mythology, describes her design as a symbol of the fragility of life.

The pink ribbon and associated bracelets are sold at our shop at Hantverkargatan 18-20. The revenue from the sale goes directly to cancer research and forms an important part in the financing of future treatments.

The ribbon is decorated with a red thread, which represents the blood that flows through our bodies. At one point the thread breaks, but is picked up again – a strong metaphor for how life can sometimes be broken, but can continue thanks to new treatment methods and research. With the design, Marakatt-Labba wants to remind us that we never know when our life thread will break, but at the same time give hope for the future and for the research that makes a difference. The yellow tabs on the ribbon represent precisely this hope and the success that research contributes to.
