Björn Camenius: What might lurk beneath

August 23 - September 16, 2018

Björn Camenius was born in 1987 and grew up in Västerås. He started his preparatory education at Västerås Art School immediately after high school and then continued at Valand Academy where he graduated in 2016. Björn had his debut exhibition last year at Galleri Uddenberg in Gothenburg but has also participated in several group exhibitions at Galleri Thomassen, Liljevalchs Vårsalong, Edvik Art Gallery and Västerås Art Museum.

Björn has received several art scholarships, such as the City of Västerås Culture Scholarship, Eric Ericson and the Otto and Charlotte Mannheimer Foundation Foundation and others. His paintings are included in the collections in the Västra Götaland region and in several private collections, including Björn Springfeldts.

Björn's painting examines different opposites, for example the planned and the random, abstraction and figuration, the creative and the destructive. Images emerge from a borderland where the illusion of reality is disturbed by the mixture of dreams and imagination. Collage work is an important part of painting. Both conceptually and as a technical tool. From fragments that he draws from different sources, he creates a new whole. Many of Björn's paintings start in collage as he does in the computer. They act as sketches. Which he then transfers to the canvas where the painting process begins and the painting is built up layer by layer.
