Marianne Lindberg De Geer: Snapshots

8.11 - 30.11. 2024
Opening Reception: Friday November 8 at 4 - 7 PM

We are pleased to present Marianne Lindberg De Geer's second solo exhibition at Galleri Helle Knudsen. The exhibition Snapshots focuses on Lindberg De Geer's family and features works from what she describes as her most significant period of painting. She reflects on her artistic journey and how life experiences have shaped her creative process. In an interview from the 1980s, when she was new to the art world, she described herself as a "middle-aged woman making a change," adding, "There was an empty chair for someone like me." At that time, she was a single mother working full-time as a psychiatric caregiver. At nearly 40, she was accepted into the Dramatic Institute, marking a turning point in her life and career. The move from Gothenburg to Stockholm offered a fresh start, and her art was deeply influenced by the family she formed.

"Sometimes I wondered how my son Ernst when he was little, perceived his situation: large portraits of him hung on the walls. In their dominance, they had a certain kinship with the idol portraits seen in dictatorships."

"Our collective family leaned to the left. Not a right-wing project, as families might now be politically characterized. Society's perspective has changed, as have feminism and gender roles."

Marianne Lindberg De Geer, born in 1946, lives and works in Stockholm. She is active as an artist, playwriter, and cultural writer, and in 2017, she also made her debut as a fiction author. In conjunction with the exhibition Snapshots, she is releasing her fifth diary, I alla fall. Her works are represented in collections such as Moderna Museet and the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm (Gripholm Collection), Skissernas Museum in Lund, Wanås Foundation, Norrköping Art Museum, and Gothenburg Art Museum.
