Britta Marakatt-Labbas lithograph Mardröm / Nightmare is based on the embroidery with the same title from 1984. The work shows a Goahti, a Sami hut, where people sleep around a fireplace. If we take a closer look, however, the nightmare becomes obvious. Giant rats stream into the circle, crawl into the beds, and have even started eating the sleeping people.
Britta Marakatt-Labba's pictures tell stories about the Sami culture and history. But the present marked by political contradictions is also there. The abuses and exploitation that have affected the Sami population are depicted through the stories of mythology. "Nightmare" could be seen as an allegory of vulnerable people when foreign powers invade the safest place - the home.
