The Swedish Academy Glossary (SAOL) “The word Skymningsland (twilight land) means a borderland or an area with unclear boundaries.”
I paint realistically, but not photographically—that is not what I strive for, at least. Sometimes, when I see something in real life—“a subject” reveals itself—it conveys such a strong feeling within me that I have to try to capture it. I start from how things actually look, but adjust reality in my own way; colors shift, objects are removed or added. I correct reality so that the feeling I experienced can be conveyed to others through my painting.
I am inspired by poetry and nature poetry, and I hope that my images can create a sense of presence, that the viewer can sense a personally experienced feeling. Once I begin to paint, I look more inward than outward; once again, it is the feeling and atmosphere I am after—the subject itself is of secondary importance. Since my painting is not abstract, it naturally leaves somewhat less room for the viewer to interpret freely, but hopefully my images can awaken something within others—a moment of stillness, contemplation, and reflection.
Magnus Petersson, born in 1964, lives and works in Växjö and has a summer studio on Hasslö in the Karlskrona archipelago. Watercolor and drawing are the techniques he primarily uses.
